Westbrook traded to Cardinals, Kearns to Yankees

Westbrook has played with the Indians since 2001
Jake Westbrook loved playing in Cleveland, but now he can look forward to playing for a contender, the St. Louis Cardinals.  Westbrook was scratched from his start today versus the Blue Jays so he could catch a flight to St. Louis.  Jake has pitched with the Indians since 2001 and has compiled a 69-69 record  with the club, and has a 6-7 record this year, with a 4.65 ERA in 21 starts this year.  Westbrook has been a solid veteran in the clubhouse and on the field.

In the three-team trade the Indians will receive Double-A pitcher Corey Kluber from San Diego. The 24-year-old righty was 6-6 with a 3.45 ERA at Double-A and led the Texas League in strikeouts.  He is assigned to Double A Akron.  The 26-year old OF Jordan Brown will be brought up from Triple- A Columbus to take Westbrook's spot on the roster. Brown was hitting .309 with 63 RBIs in the minors.

The Padres were also part of the deal receiving OF Ryan Ludwick who was eligible for free agency at the end of the season.  Ludwick hit .281 11Hr and 43 RBI's.

The Cardinals will receive P Jake Westbrook, and LHP Nick Greenwood.  Greenwood is 22- years old and has a 4-4 record with a 4.15 ERA at class A Fort Wayne.

Kearns to Yankees

Austin Kearns came to the Indians as a free agent signed to a minor league deal.  He proved he has some offense although has slowed down lately.  The Indians staff was impressed with his leadership in the clubhouse and locker room, but dealt Kearns to the Yankees yesterday.  Kearns was hitting .272 with 8HR 42 RBIs so far this season.  The Indians will get a player to be named later.  The Indians front office said there are a bunch of prospects they can chose from, but we will follow them the rest of the season and make a decision.
